As Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureas becomes increasingly resistant to the known antibiotics, it becomes necessary for us to find alternative MRSA treatment to kill this bacteria, which is responsible for so many illnesses that are a challenge to cure. Recent, preliminary studies are now showing that blue light can be exceptionally helpful in destroying the bacteria.

The most significant of the research on this topic occurred at the New York Institute of Technology in a team under scientist Chukuka S. Enwemeka, PhD (study to be published in the April, 2009 issue of the Journal of Antimicrobial Agents and Chemothearapy), where photo-irradiation was performed on two strains of MRSA using a blue light wavelength. The result was that the scientists were able to use the blue light to kill over ninety percent of the bacteria. Low doses of blue light MRSA treatment – approximately 100 seconds of 405 to 470nm –killed approximately 30 percent of the bacteria, while just over fifteen minutes killed up to 80 percent of the bacteria.

Though not yet being labeled as the cure for MRSA, blue light is now acknowledged as a very helpful element in fighting against the spread of the MRSA staph superbug.
