Blue Light Kills Bacteria Associated with Periodontitis

The mouth is a complicated place. There are a number of diseases that can spring up, and teeth can be problematic without proper care or due to genetics. In fact, women have suffered miscarriages because of a dental infection of which they were not aware. Some conditions are more serious than others, but they should all be taken care of immediately. One particularly bothersome condition is periodontitis. Thankfully, blue light may be the answer to clearing this up for many patients.

You may never look into your mouth in the same way again, but you should know there are over 700 different types of bacteria around your teeth. Many are good bacteria, but there are some that cause many conditions of concern, periodontitis being just one of them. The most destructive of these is the black-pigmented bacteria or BPB. Within this bacteria are compounds called porphyrins. As it turns out, these are photosensitive. That means they can be destroyed or reduced by the application of light.

Dentists and other oral care professionals have been using laser and light for teeth whitening, and they can now use blue light (405-410nm) to help rid the mouth of the periodontitis bacteria. Green and red light has some affect on the bacteria, but blue has been proven (through clinical trials) to be the most effective by far. Blue light may be one of the most powerful tools a dental professional can use, as it can be used for whitening and now for the health of the teeth in the prevention of periodontitis.
