The Color Indigo and the Human Being

Indigo like blue decreases blood pressure and heart rate, dissolves nervousness and stress and has a very calming effect on the entire organism. It is very effective in the treatment of headaches and sleep disorders/insomnia. Indigo is also a highly effective color for meditation, communication, spiritual growth and higher mental qualities. It controls the psychic energy flow of the extra subtle body through the brow charka (or third eye) and is therefore responsible for all the extra-sensory abilities such as telepathy, premonition and the like. Indigo is the opening to our unconscious selves, our intuition and our relationship to the great mysteries. On the physical, astral and spiritual planes indigo influences vision, hearing and smell. Oftentimes individuals will report their heightened sense of awareness in these areas after an indigo treatment.

Chakra: Ajna
Location: Brow
Endocrine Association: Pituitary, Hypothalamus
Pituitary, often called the Master Gland, produces a number of hormones that influence various other endocrine glands.
Hypothalamus activates and controls the part of the nervous system that controls involuntary body functions, the hormonal system, and many body functions, such as regulating sleep and stimulating appetite.

Pituitary gland: Related organs/systems

  • Located in the centre of the brain and is slightly higher than the back of the nose.
  • The most important gland of the endocrine systems, the pituitary gland is in charge of regulating different hormones that indirectly or directly affect virtually all the basic functions of the body.
  • The pituitary is divided into two distinct parts
    1. The anterior lobe – regulates that thyroid, adrenals and reproductive gland activities.
    2. The posterior lobe – helps to create balance of body water

Possible diseases/disorders resulting from pituitary gland malfunction:

  • · Acromegaly and Gigantism – a hormonal disorder that occurs when the pituitary produces too much growth hormone, often resulting in abnormally large feet, hands and face. Another condition can result from excessive production of the grown hormone and is known as Gigantism. This is when a person grows abnormally high.
  • · Hypopituitarism – A disorder that occurs when the pituitary gland fails to secrete hormones needed to stimulate one of the endocrine glands. It affects the pituitary glands’ anterior lobe.
  • · Cushing’s disease – disorder that causes fat to accumulate in the face, chest and back
  • · Tumors – There are two different types of tumors common in the pituitary gland:
    1. Prolactinoma – a benign tumor in the pituitary that produces the hormone prolactin. This hormone encourages the production of breast milk during pregnancy.
    2. Pituitary tumors – these are usually non-threatening abnormal growths on the pituitary. Some of the tumors secrete regular hormones that are secreted by the pituitary.

Hypothalamus: Related organs/systems

  • Located in the brain directly above the pituitary gland.
  • The hypothalamus is in charge of homeostasis – maintaining the body’s natural routine. This includes regulating body temperature and blood pressure, and keeping fluid, electrolytes, hormones and emotions balanced.
  • The hypothalamus’ job is to ensure everything is in working order and fixes that which is not. It releases hormones that start and stop the release of the hormones secreted by the pituitary gland.

Possible diseases/disorders resulting from hypothalamus malfunction:

  • Hypothalamic hamartoma – This is a benign tumor that often spans the optic nerve and usually forms during gestation. Many children with the disease suffer from laughing seizures caused by the tumor that grow increasingly worse with age. This is a rare condition.
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome – condition characterized by constant fatigue and never feeling rested. It is believed by many medical researchers that the hypothalamus controls sleep. The hypothalamus requires natural daylight in order to function effectively. Therefore, someone who suffers from chronic fatigue syndrome may not be receiving enough natural daylight.
  • Endocrine system disorders – Due to the fact that the hypothalamus is in charge of the regulation and balancing of many functions within the body, it is often indirectly affected by disorders that occur within the other endocrine glands.
